I have been a passionate advocate and orchestrator of growth in the technology industry for more than 23 years. What makes my experience unique is that I have been able to study and impact growth through various lenses – Marketing, Branding, Strategy, Sales and Product Management. There are three things that I have learned about business growth in the technology industry.
1) You cannot take growth for granted. You might be competitive at dinner. Next morning someone else is eating your breakfast. Yes. Literally at that speed.
2) Growth is not merely a sales agenda. It requires alignment and orchestration across sales, capabilities, practices, marketing, finance, HR and the ecosystem of partners. Everyone is a stakeholder in growth.
3) Long term growth is nary a straight line. It is not a case of “plant the seeds, fertilize and water regularly”. Growth is an ACTIVE endeavor. Management of growth is continuous. Growth means change is continuous. Change means learning is continuous. It is damned hard. But it is necessary.
There is a fourth thing as well. But it is a sort of universal truth that the world seems to be finally waking up to. Growth is about people. Everything else can change, but your people are your rocks. If an organization can motivate, incentivize and inspire every employee to be a “growth agent”, the future is happy and bright. Not only for the organization but for its people, its customers and eventually the whole world.
