The internet is probably one of the most powerful technologies that has shaped our everyday lives. Many would say that the internet changed our world for the better, while others will say otherwise. So if you’re among the many wondering if the internet has made the world better or worse, we’re here to help. It’s safe to say that the digital world is not perfect nor completely negative, so this question isn’t answered with a simple yes or no.

In this blog, we will share our thoughts on how the internet has affected our daily lives and determine whether it has made the world a better place.

1. Communication

An internet connection, especially one of the best internet plans, makes communication convenient and easier. No matter what time it is or where you currently are, you can easily communicate with your friends, family, and other loved ones with just a few taps on your phone or laptop.

It has been a game changer because, if you think about it, communication was very demanding in the past. You either needed to send emails or meet in person to actually talk to each other. However, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows because the convenience it provided for communication also made way for miscommunication and cybersecurity threats (phishing) that can endanger individuals who aren’t well aware of online threats.

2. Information Access

With Google, Safari, and other search engines, there’s no doubt that looking for information has never been easier. You just need to type in what you’re looking for, for example, “best internet providers near me” or “best restaurants near me,” your search engine will display a list of what you’re looking for. It has also greatly benefited students doing their research or anyone needing information.

Unfortunately, while there is a lot of accurate, factual information online, there is also a lot of misleading information and harmful content that internet users must be aware of. It’s the era of misinformation and disinformation, so everyone should be careful with all the information they see online.

3. Connecting with Other People

Social media platforms (Facebook, X, Instagram, Reddit, etc.) allow people worldwide to connect to each other like they’re neighbors. It’s great for anyone looking for friendship or partners in life, and there’s no denying that social media platforms have made it easier for everyone to connect with others.

However, this convenience also comes with safety and security concerns, especially when it comes to cybercriminals or online Internet predators who may exploit vulnerabilities in online interactions to harm others, particularly children (usually on Roblox) and vulnerable populations. It’s best to have additional security software or wireless providers that offer additional safety features for users to help prevent these from happening.

4. Shopping and Entertainment

Nowadays, shopping for anything online is possible. Clothing, food, furniture, gadgets—name it, and it will be available online. People can also watch movies through their favorite streaming services, play games, and listen to live concerts in the comfort of their own homes or wherever they are. For those who utilize the internet for these things, the internet has made the world better.

Final Thoughts

The internet has made the world better for us, but cyber criminals and other individuals who exploit this technology have worsened it. While that statement is harsh, it’s the ugly reality of our world. So, let this article be your reminder to always be careful with all your online activities, whether it’s searching for information, buying stuff, or making friends.
