Brad Carson is President of Americans for Responsible Innovation (ARI), an organization that advocates for reasonable guardrails around frontier technologies like artificial intelligence and synthetic biology. From 2021-2025, he was President of the University of Tulsa where he grew enrollment, made TU home to the most National Merit Scholars per capita of any university in the nation, and inaugurated new programs in the great books and in engineering. Before coming to TU, Mr. Carson was a professor at the University of Virginia.
Mr. Carson was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2015 as the acting Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel & Readiness at the Department of Defense. For his work as Under Secretary, military historian Richard Kohn has hailed Mr. Carson as the most successful and consequential person to ever hold the job. Mr. Carson earlier served as the Under Secretary of the U.S. Army and as General Counsel of the U.S. Army. A Rhodes Scholar, he is widely published and a noted authority on national security, energy policy, and American politics.
From 2001-2005, he served two terms as a United States Congressman from Oklahoma. Later, he was appointed to the faculty of the business and law schools at the University of Tulsa, where he directed the National Energy Policy Institute and taught academic courses on energy policy, property law, negotiation and game theory, globalization, and law and literature. Mr. Carson deployed as an intelligence officer during Operation Iraqi Freedom and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service.
